While collaborating with an international team of engineers and our founder, we built a deal-finder app to grow Auckland’s food scene, encourage exploration of its diverse food culture, and support local businesses.
Post-COVID, the hospitality industry was struggling—Zomato pulled out of New Zealand, making it harder to find restaurants and food deals. That’s when Hops was founded by a group of university students, aiming to quickly connect people with the best food deals and revive the local hospitality scene.
Unlike many cities, Auckland is polycentric, meaning people tend to stay within their own neighbourhoods rather than explore. As a result, foodie culture is less prominent with less natural exploration, and restaurants must spend more on outreach to attract customers.
Comparison of activity centers between Auckland and Melbourne (which has a very vibrant food scene)
Making it easier to discover deals and events, will encourage people to explore and eat out more, driving foodie culture and growth in Auckland's hospitality industry.
Home Dashboard
On this page, users can quickly filter, get recommendations, find deals, and navigate to venue detail pages—making it easier to discover affordable food options and new spots.
Your foodie friend Hops
Ever wanted a foodie friend who knows all the best deals? Hops does the work for you, finding and recommending the best spots!
Seeing what’s nearby is essential, so we added a filterable map to help users explore their local area.
Let Hops be your go-to for saving and organizing all your favourite spots in one place.
After launching our MVP, we prioritized ongoing testing. During Auckland University’s O-Week, we conducted guerrilla testing with students, gathering feedback to refine and enhance the app.
